1870
When it all began
The first telegraph service started in Tokyo and Yokohama, laying the groundwork for all future NTT endeavours.
Following that, in 1890, the first telephone service is started, creating the infrastructure for the future of communications technology in Japan.

1950 — 1990

The Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Public Corporation is established
Work immediately began on the building of a nationwide telephone architecture aiming to eliminate waiting lists and 100% automatic connection for all.

Revealing Futuristic Communication Tech
NTT shows the future of communication by exhibiting a video-telephone connecting Osaka with Tokyo and a wireless telephone at the Japan World Exhibition.

1985
Privatization of Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation
NTT is privatized and the NTT “Dynamic Loop” logo is first unveiled, and the corporate identity of constantly innovating and putting clients, people and society at the heart of the business is put in place.

Launch of NTT DATA
NTT DATA is launched with the aim of leveraging information technology to create new value for both clients and society at large. With a commitment to innovation and societal impact, it seeks to harness the transformative potential of IT to drive positive change.

Foresight
NTT advocated VI&P, the vision that aimed for global a telecommunication society, which influenced the “information superhighway” concept created by Al Gore.

Launch of NTT DOCOMO
NTT Mobile Communications Network, Inc takes over mobile communications business of the reorganizing Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT)

1994
Pioneering Internet Service
NTT announced its Basic Concepts of Multimedia, part of NTT’s plan to create an easy-to-use internet service. These basic concepts were the base for Open Computer Network (OCN), which launched in 1996.

1999
Launch of NTT EAST, NTT WEST and NTT Communications
Three new subsidiaries are created and launched: NTT EAST and NTT WEST, which divided all local telecommunication operations in Japan, and NTT Communications, which handled NTT’s international business.

Revolutionizing Communication
The world’s first cell phone IP connection service, “i-mode” is developed. This lead to the creation of Emoji which revolutionized communication across the globe for years to come.

Acquisition of Dell Services and Launch of NTT Security
NTT DATA’s acquisition of Dell Services, now NTT DATA Services, enhances its global brand and IT leadership, empowering clients with impactful solutions. Meanwhile, NTT Security, now NTT Ltd., becomes the central security hub within the NTT Group.

Commitment to United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals
NTT announced the commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Utilizing ICT and know-how to help transform our world.

2018
Launching NTT Inc with Global Competitiveness Strategy
NTT announced its mid-term strategy which aims to achieve global competitiveness, and launched NTT, Inc. The newly formed Inc brought together the talents, diverse skills, and global management experience from all across the NTT family.

2019
Integrating Global Brands for Leading Technology Services
NTT Ltd. is launched, integrating NTT Brands worldwide including Dimension Data, NTT Security, and NTT Communications (outside Japan). Employing 40,000 people over 70 countries, NTT Ltd. provides world-leading global technology and managed services.

The valuable 500
In December 2019, NTT joined “The Valuable 500,” an international initiative to promote the participation in the business of people with disabilities.
Being in accordance with the purposes of The Valuable 500, NTT promotes its initiatives.

IOWN concept announced
The IOWN (Innovative Optical and Wireless Network) concept is aimed at transforming existing information and communication systems and realizing a new information and communication infrastructure that goes beyond the limitations of current ICT technology.
NTT, Intel Corporation (Intel) and Sony Corporation (Sony) established a new industry forum, the IOWN Global Forum, to promote IOWN by collaborating with partners all over the world.

“IOWN: Beyond the Internet” publication
This book is about how the IOWN initiative aims to swift from electronics to photonics, creating natural “information environment” interfaces where people are unaware of the underlying technology and supporting global diversity with the power of networks and information processing.

Establishment of NTT Group Global Sustainability Charter
Based on the concept of moving towards “Self as We”, NTT will promote corporate and economic growth and will contribute to resolving social issues to realize a sustainable society.

2022
Launch NTT DATA, Inc. and New DOCOMO Group
NTT DATA and NTT Group combine the IT Services organizations outside Japan (NTT DATA, NTT, Inc and NTT Ltd) into a new operating company known as NTT Data, Inc. Additionally, by integrating NTT DOCOMO, NTT Communications, and NTT Comware, the new DOCOMO Group has been formed expanding its domain from mobile to services and solutions.

All-Photonics Network IOWN1.0 Service Launched
NTT launched the All-Photonics Network IOWN1.0. It is the first commercial service for the realization of IOWN concept, and exclusively uses optical wavelengths in all sections of the communication network.

Establishment of AI governance
NTT Group establishes AI governance policies to promote responsible AI use, including an AI Charter and the establishment of Co-CAIO and AI Governance Office for the provision of AI that customers can use with confidence

2025
Refreshing the corporate identity
To strengthen the position of the brand as a global technology company, the corporate name was changed to NTT, Inc. and a new logo was adopted. The Dynamic Loop was retained while the logo typeface was updated to align with the font and color already in use in the global market.
NTT established the NTT Group Core: Innovating for a sustainable future for people and planet and updated the NTT Group Values : Act with integrity, Build trust, Create connections
