Facing New Challenges
in Public Transportation
in Victoria, Australia
Analytics and Big Data are your best allies in mitigating the impact of COVID-19.
Innovation Keeps The City Moving, No Matter What
The State of Victoria and NTT have a long history of partnership and collaboration. In 2008, they launched myki, one of the largest public mass-transit mobile-enabled smartcard projects in the world. Since then, they have continued to work together to continually deliver advanced technologies that can enhance transit systems.
Then, in 2020, the global pandemic reached Australia. As in the rest of the world, the COVID-19 virus has had a disruptive impact on the way citizens live and move around, particularly affecting public transportation. At NTT, we quickly understood the seriousness of the situation and immediately started to design innovative solutions capable of facing this double challenge: keeping people traveling and the transport network running while, at the same time, ensuring the safety and wellbeing of staff and customers.
Together we enable a smarter world
-
1.
Mobile myki
- Mobile myki offers a new channel for public transport users.
- Each customer’s mobile phone can become a myki smartcard.
- With myki on their mobile devices, customers do not need to queue to purchase tickets or interact with staff.
- This reduces the probability of virus contagion and increases safety for everyone.
-
2.
Enhanced Occupancy Control
- The system detects current and future area occupancy for stations, platforms and vehicles.
- Real-time information enables a highly efficient response for COVID-19 and beyond.
- Customers can easily check the occupancy levels of a particular station and plan the best time to travel.
- Statistics make it possible to anticipate crowd movements and assign resources appropriately.
